Man alive was this a gorgeous day! Just beautiful, not too cold not too warm, not windy, sunny... just perfect. Metroed to Ballston with my bike and biked about 2 miles to Bluemont park where the race started. Met up and chatted with some friends before the race which is always nice and relaxing. And off we went in the mud - then on the bike trail. It was a very hilly course and I realized I'm a very strong runner in hills, going up and down, and not that great on the flats. I went out too fast and did the first mile in 7:30, the second mile I slowed way down since my shins hurt, and the rest wasn't marked well. A bunch of people past me between miles 2 and 4, and then my shins started feeling better and the hills started, and I kept passing people both on the up and on the downhills. I don't think anyone past me after mile 4. I hit mile 6.1 at 51:00 and realized how out of shape I am... oh boy... but it was very hilly. I thought for a second that maybe I could break 1 hour, but at that point I thought a 12k was 7.2 miles - hey, that extra .2 miles counts! I sped up a bit the last .5 miles and finished on the muddy terrain again - a few minutes after my friend Brent, but ahead of the other 4 people I knew in the race. Not too bad! We all went to brunch to celebrate after, and then I biked home. Need to do strengthening exercises and stretch! Happy Sunday runners!

Official results are in: I was the 22nd woman out of 105, and the 93rd runner out of 219. As long as I'm on the top half, I'm happy!

Great job, Rocket. Glad the shins didn't bother you too much.

Congrats on the race Lucia.

Man are those shin bothering you again? You tell them this is NOT allowed. Jump right on them with massage and ice. Have you looked at orthotics? that might be something you need. Great job on the race, sounds fun.

Alright, Lucia! Way to race strong! You rock!

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Feb 02, 2009 at 10:08:24

Great Race!! Good to see that you were able to do so well even with the shins buggin' a bit. Sounds like a fun race and a great day for it.

Thanks everyone!

Josse, apparently my shin issues are caused by my hips... I was told to run on neutral shoes and not use orthotics because my feet will adapt better to my hips that way... go figure! I need to get more info on scraping from you... And I'm icing as I type... thanks for the support!

Why do women's hips cause so many problems??? Not fair!

YOU DID GREAT!!! I do not think that is an out of shape run at all! That is an awesome time, especially for a hilly course. Hills are tough, up and down (okay, maybe the down is just tough for me).

AWESOME race! You are one speedy chick! Get those shins better :)

Lucia,

Way to go. just over an hour for a 7.4 mile run? Not bad at all. Not sure I could do that at the moment. I've read that women have hip issues with running due to the hip sockets being farther apart and your legs being at more of an angle when running. Women's legs aren't as straight up and down as men's.

Nice work! When are you going to start tracking your swimming?

From Lucia on Fri, Feb 06, 2009 at 10:07:32

Monte, the cross-training tracker doesn't really work that well... if I enter bike or swim miles, my running miles aren't added to the running totals... so I will only enter my running miles here - in any case, I won't be swimming until it gets a bit warmer - biking to work after swimming with wet hair is asking for trouble...
